Structural engineer Fazlur R Khan, born in Dhaka, Bangladesh, embraced the 20th century American tradition of innovative skyscraper design when he moved to the United States in 1960. In the following decade Dr. Khan revolutionized high-rise building design with his development of efficient structural systems for supertall buildings. He was known for his exceptional collaboration with architects and the visual logic of his structural systems, which enabled them to guide the building architecture on his design projects. His projects include the record-breaking 110 story Sears Tower in Chicago (which held the title of world's tallest building from its completion in 1974 until 1996) and the fabric, tensile roof structure for the immense Hajj Terminal at the Jeddah International Airport in Saudi Arabia.
